1. Those born of God keep his commandments (1 John 2:3-4; 3:24).
2. Those born of God walk as Christ did (1 John 2:6).
3. Those born of God do not hate others, but love them (1 John 2:9; 3:14; 4:7-8, 20.
4. Those born of God do not love the world (1 John 2:16).
5. Those born of God confess the Son and receive him (1 John 2:23; 4:15; 5:12).
6. Those born of God practice righteousness (1 John 2:29).
7. Those born of God do not make a practice of sinning (1 John 3:6, 9-10; 5:18)
8. Those born of God possess the Spirit of God (1 John 3:24; 4:13).
9. Those born of God listen submissively to the apostolic word (1 John 4:6).
10. Those born of God believe that the historic Jesus is the Christ of God (1 John 5:1).
11. Those born of God overcome the world (1 John 5:4).
John Piper makes the following three points from First John 2:19.
1) Those who seemed to be born again and forsook the faith never were born again, i.e. they never were “of us.” In other words, the explanation is not that they lost the new birth, but that they never had it to begin with.
2) Those who truly are born again (of us) will endure to the end in faith, “they would have continued with us.” Perseverance is the fruit of the new birth that the hypocrite cannot counterfeit.
3) God often makes plain who the false teachers and prophets in the church are by the fact that they eventually reject the truth of God and the people of God. It became clear in John’s day and it often becomes clear in our day as well.
